Guerville Viaduct over the A13

The existing viaduct of Guerville, built in the 60’s, is in urgent need of repairs. To restore these bridge decks, which form part of the A13 connecting Paris and Normandy, the SAPN, one of the operators of the French highways, decided to erect a new overpass. This will allow the heavy traffic flow to be deviated throughout the renovation and should limit the traffic hindrance for the 120.000 cars which drive over the A13 every day. After the maintenance works, this new bridge will remain part of the viaduct, to create additional traffic lanes.

The viaduct runs above the national roadway D113, as well as above the railways connecting Paris and Normandy. From above, the bridge is constrained by powerlines. With these conditions in mind, a slender bridge type was the obvious choice. De bridge deck, with a total span of 360 m, consists of two main girders which are connected by cross beams. De main girders have a height of about 4 m and the entire deck is 16.5 m wide.

The construction of the bridge will happen in multiple phases. The bridge is subdivided into separate smaller entities, which will be prefabricated and transported to the construction site. On site the different elements are welded together on one side of the deck. Subsequently the metal bridge deck will be ‘launched’, over the different bridge pillars to the other side using hydraulic jacks. Due to the extensive length of the bridge, the crossing will be executed over three separate launches.
