CO₂ Performance Ladder – Level 2

Introduction

At Victor Buyck Steel Construction, we are actively committed to protecting the environment. We strive to reduce the environmental impact of our activities. To achieve this in a structured manner, we have opted for certification according to the CO₂ Performance Ladder.

The CO₂ Performance Ladder (CO₂PL) is a tool that encourages public authorities and organisations to reduce their CO₂ emissions and promote sustainable business practices. We are currently certified at Level 5 of the Ladder, handbook version 3.1. We are working towards certification at Level 2 of handbook version 4.0. Level 2 within handbook 4.0 is equivalent to Level 5 within handbook 3.1.

Policy

Victor Buyck Steel Construction commits to:

  • Focusing on energy efficiency, energy flexibility, sustainable energy and the reduction of CO₂ emissions;
  • Being transparent about our performance with regard to energy consumption and CO₂ emissions, including emissions within our value chain (Scope 3);
  • Continuously improving and making timely adjustments through our management system, partly based on the progress of our climate transition plan;
  • Complying with legal requirements regarding energy efficiency, sustainable energy and CO₂ reduction.

This policy provides the framework within which we define, assess and update our energy and CO₂ objectives and action plans. It covers all our own activities (Scope 1 and 2), including energy consumption of buildings, processes, vehicles, mobile equipment and construction sites, as well as activities within the value chain (Scope 3). The policy applies to all employees, locations and entities of Victor Buyck Steel Construction.

Emissions, targets and measures

The emissions of Victor Buyck Steel Construction have been calculated for all years within the period 2021–2025. The diagram below shows the results for 2025.

We distinguish between three types of emissions:

  • Scope 1 emissions: direct emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels (such as gas, diesel and petrol);
  • Scope 2 emissions: indirect emissions resulting from the production of electricity purchased from the grid by Victor Buyck Steel Construction;
  • Scope 3 emissions: other emissions within our value chain.

We have chosen intensity-based targets (per tonne of purchased steel) for our Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions. By 2030, we aim to reduce our combined Scope 1 & 2 emission intensity by 69% compared to the reference year 2021, from 0.582 to 0.180 tCO₂eq per tonne of steel. For Scope 3, we aim for a reduction of 10% for steel-related emissions and 20% for non-steel-related emissions.

In terms of energy, we aim to halve our energy intensity (-50%) and source 95% of our electricity from renewable sources. More details can be found in our progress report via the hyperlinks below.
