Installation of the central span (LIFT 4) of New Wear Footbridge
Sunderland, U.K. - The New Wear Footbridge in Sunderland has achieved a significant milestone with the installation of its central span.
The central span of the New Wear Footbridge, constructed in our workshops in Wondelgem, is a critical component of the structure. Measuring 105 meters in length and weighing approximately 650 tonnes, the span was designed to meet the specific needs and challenges of the Wear River crossing. Its installation required precise planning and coordination, utilizing advanced technologies and highly skilled personnel.
The installation of the central span was executed using strand jacks, a sophisticated lifting method that allows for the precise and controlled movement of heavy loads. Strand jacks are hydraulic devices that use multiple steel cables (or strands) to lift and position large structures. On the 16th of September 2024, the span was lifted into place in just one day. The strand jacks had been positioned on either side of the river on the already installed LIFTs 2 and 3 in the days before. They were anchored securely to handle the weight of the central span. Throughout the day, LIFT 4 was gradually lifted and moved into position, with constant monitoring to ensure alignment and stability. The precision of the strand jacks allowed for real-time adjustments, ensuring the span fit perfectly with the rest of the bridge structure.
The successful installation of the central span marks a significant milestone for the New Wear Footbridge project. Victor Buyck Steel Construction is building the New Wear Footbridge together with VolkerStevin for the Council of the City of Sunderland.
